في بداية الحرب الأهلية الإسبانية، وقبل أسابيع قليلة من اغتيال لوركا بأيدي الفاشيين في آب 1936، سئل الشاعر عن رأيه في سقوط غرناطة بأيدي الإسبان عام 1492، فأجاب : كانت نكبة، على الرغم من أنهم يلقنوننا العكس في المدارس. حضارة رائعة، وشعر، وفلك، وعمران، ورقة شعور فريدة في العالم. ضاعت كلها لتقوم محلها مدينة فقيرة هي \"جنة البخلاء\"، والتي يلعب بمقدراتها الآن أرذل البرجوازيين في إسبانية\". وقد ظهر هذا التصريح المناوئ على صفحات أكبر جريدة في مدريد، وكان سببا مباشرا في موت الشاعر وهو في الثامنة والثلاثين. وقبل خمس سنين من ذلك قال لوركا في مقابلة أخرى: \"أعتقد أن أصلي الغرناطي منحني شعورا بالتآخي مع جميع المضطهدين غجرا وسودا ويهودا. مع المورسكيين الذين نحفظ ذكراهم نحن الغرنوطيين في قلوبنا\".
