Overview
ولدت فيزياء البلازما في عشرينيات القرن الماضي عند دراسة الانفراغ في الغازات. وقد أحرز هذا الفرع من العلوم تقدما كبيرا منذ ذلك الحين وحتى اليوم نظرا لأهميته العلمية والصناعية. في حالة التوازن الترموديناميكي تعتبر البلازما الحالة الرابعة للمادة، ولا تظهر هذه الحالة إلا في درجات حرارة أعلى من بضعة آلاف من الدرجات. وبالتالي فهي تسيطر على الجزء الأكبر من الكون. حيث نجدها في قلب النجوم وفي مراكز المجرات الغازية. وتساهم فيزياء البلازما على الصعيد الصناعي بتقنيات متعددة. منها ما هو قيد الدراسة مثل إنتاج الكهرباء (الاندماج النووي المسيطر عليه) ومعالجة المواد (اللحام والقص والصب). أما الغازات ضعيفة التأين، التي هي موضوع هذا الكتاب فهي تستخدم لإنتاج مواد جديدة، ولمعالجة السطوح، وكذلك لإنتاج الأوزون.
