بسط ابن رشد أهم آرائه الأخلاقية من خلال شروحه على الأخلاق إلى نيقوماخوس لأرسطو وجوامع السياسة لأفلاطون. وأناط بالمرأة دورا حاسما في رسم ملامح الأجيال القادمة، فألح على ضرورة إصلاح دورها الاجتماعي في إنجاب الأطفال والخدمة المنزلية. وقد قال بعض الباحثين\" لقد تساءل الفيلسوف ابن رشد في القرن الثاني عشر الميلادي وهو يعاين انطفاء آخر أنوار الحضارة العربية التي سمت في الشرق الأوسط وأسبانيا إلى ذرى شاهقة عما إذا لم يكن هذا الانحطاط يرجع حزئيا على الأقل إلى الوضع الذي حبست فيه المرأة، وإلى انتباذها خارج الحياة الاجتماعية.
