هذا كتاب وضعه المؤلف للطلبة ليكون مرشدا لهم في حياتهم الأخلاقية، يلفتهم إلى نفوسهم، ويبين لهم أهم نظريات العلم، ويوسع نظرهم فيما يعرض عليهم من الأعمال اليومية، ويعدهم للتوسع في علم النفس والأخلاق والاجتماع. هذا وقد راعى فيه الجهة العملية أكثر مما راعى الجهة النظرية. وفضل مراعاة المعنى على مراعاة اللفظ، فلم يعمد إلى تزويق اللفظ كما عمدت إلى إيضاح المعنى ليكون سهل التناول. (وجاءت محتوياته في أقسام) وقد قسمه إلى ثلاثة أقسام، بحث في القسم الأول في موضوعات نفسية لا بد منها للأخلاق كالعادة والإرادة، وذكر في القسم الثاني أهم نظريات علم الأخلاق وتاريخه، وعني في القسم الثالث بالمسائل العملية التي تعرض للإنسان في حياته. هذا مع اقتصار ما يناسب الطلب ويليق به. ولعل أول كتاب في اللغة العربية من نوعه، من حيث موضوعاته ونمطه، على حاجتنا الشديدة إلى كثير من الكتب في هذا الموضوع الذي عنيت به الأمم الحية فألفت فيه الكتب العديدة مطولة ومختصرة، تناسب كل طبقة في درجاتها العقلية المختلفة.
