من الواضح أن المؤلف متأثر إلى حد كبير بالتصور الماركسي للفن، فهو يستند في تصوره للفن على التاريخ أو الوقائع التاريخية، وهو يفهم تاريخ الفن من خلال رؤية اجتماعية تربط الفن بالمجتمع الذي يشتمل فيما يشتمل على القوى الاقتصادية والسياسية وعلى هذا يمكن القول إن الرؤية التي توجه فكر هاوزر بوجه عام هي الرؤية الاجتماعية لتاريخ الفن. ولقد قدم لنا هاوزر تلك الرؤية في كتابه السابق عن الفن والمجتمع عبر التاريخ من خلال منهج وصفى تجريبي أي من خلال دراسة وصفية لوقائع الفن المتواترة عبر التاريخ الإنساني التي تدعم تلك الرؤية التي يبدو فيها الفن مرتبطا بسياقه الاجتماعي.
