تمكن القواسم في القرن السابع عشر الميلادي من جمع أضخم قوة بحرية في المنطقة ثم اصطدموا مع بريطانيا الأمر الذي دفع الأنجليز لأرسال حملة بحرية للمهاجمة القواسم ولقد لعب القواسم دورا رائدا في تاريخ الخليج العربي كان أحد أجدادهم \"قاسم الكبير الحسيني السامرائي\" قد جاء ليقيم في جلفار منذ القرن السابع عشر. وبفضله أصبحت هذه المدينة المركز الرئيسي للقواسم وعرفت منذ ذلك الحين باسمها رأس الخيمة.
