رواية \"أسير المتمهدي\" هي رواية تاريخية تشتمل على وصف الوقائع التي مرت بها كل من مصر والسودان في الربع الأخير من القرن التاسع عشر ودسائس ومؤامرات الدول الأجنبية التي أدت إلى حدوث الثورة العرابية في مصر بقيادة أحمد عرابي والثورة المهدية في السودان بقيادة محمد أحمد المهدي كما تصف الرواية وقائع الاحتلال البريطاني لوادي النيل وقد عايش مؤلف هذه الرواية بعض وقائع هذه الأحداث حيث أوفد زيدان كمترجم مع الحملة البريطانية المتوجهة إلى السودان لفك الحصار الذي أقامه المهدي وجيوشه على القائد البريطاني غوردون.
