الرواية من نوعية الروايات التاريخية تستقي أحداثها من وقائع التاريخ الإسلامي خلال الفترة العباسية حيث تشتمل على ما وقع بين الأمين والمأمون من خلاف على الخلافة بعد وفاة والدهما الخليفة هارون الرشيد وقد تطورت هذه الأحداث بعد ذلك إلى صراع بين الأخوين دخل فيه الأحلاف والموالون ولعبت فيه الدسائس والمؤامرات دورا كبيرا كما سنرى في نهاية الرواية حيث أيدت الفرس المأمون وناصرته على أخيه الأمين حتى سقطت بغداد وقتل الأمين على يد خونة من أتباع المأمون.
