المؤرخ أحمد فريد الرفاعي قام بتأريخ هذا العصر المزدهر، عصر المأمون وبيان ما كان فيه، على التفصيل والإجمال، خاصة وأن التاريخ الإسلامي بشكل عام ما زالت تعوزه المصادر الجادة كما يعوزه التنظيم والترتيب والتحقيق والاستقراء، فما بالنا إذا تعلق الأمر بفترة هامة كهذه من تاريخ الحضارة الإسلامية ؛ فقد استطاع المأمون أن يطيح بأخيه الأمين في الصراع على سدة الحكم بعد وفاة والدهما هارون الرشيد، وأن يوحد أركان الدولة الإسلامية.
