دراسة متأنية لتاريخ الكتابات أو الأبجديات، منذ ظهورها الأول إلى الإنترنت، وهذا مرورا والعالم الإغريقي وأوروبا. مقارنة دقيقة بين ثلاث منظومات للكتابة وضعتها المؤلفة في سياقاتها التي رأت فيها النور: طرق كتابة الأعداد على النقود الكتابة المعلوماتية القائمة على الترميز (وقد نشأت المسكوكة (وبدأ ذلك في إيونيا، حوالي عام 620 قبل الميلاد)، وأخيرا من عام 1969، في الولايات المتحدة). في ما بين 1936 و 1942، ثم واصلتها كتابة الشبكات، بدءا وإذ تقوم المؤلفة بتوصيف كل طريقة من هذه الطرق تقوم أيضا بتحليل بناها المتفرعة وبإظهار تأثير هذه المنظومات في العلاقة بين مستعمليها والعالم.
