يتناول الكتاب ثمانية أبواب وخاتمة تتصدرها مقدمة تتحدث عن الكتاب وأهميته وعمل محققه فيه، وتترجم لمصنفه ابن وحشية وليوسف همَّر المستشرق الذي كشف أولا عن الكتاب. تحدث الباب الأول عن معرفة الأقلام الكوفي والمغربي الأندلسي والهندي، وأشار الباب الثاني إلى أقلام السرياني والنبطي القديم والعبراني والبرباوي والقمي والمَسند واليوناني المعروف بقلم الحكماء. وتوفر الباب الثالث على ذكر أقلام الحكماء السبعة المشهورين ؛ هرمس وإقليمون وأفلاطون وفيثاغورث وأسقلينوس وسقراط وأرسطوس. ونجد في الباب الرابع الأقلام التي ظهرت بعد هذه السبعة من الحكماء أيضاً ممن عرفوا بالعلوم والمعارف.
