جاء في مقدمة الكتاب أن الدراسة لا تعد تعصبا للقبيلة والمناداة بالعودة إلى العصور البائدة، وإنما من أجل إبراز التاريخ الماضي للقبيلة ومقارنته بالحاضر وتوضيح بعض العادات والتقاليد القبلية، واعتبر المؤلف كتابه أول دراسة أكاديمية عن قبيلة بلعبيد في حضرموت في العصر الحديث وتفتح آفاقا أمام الباحثين والمهتمين إلى دراسات أوفر وأشمل عن القبيلة داخل المجتمع اليمني عامة والحضرمي خاصة، وجاء الكتاب على أربعة فصول هي : جغرافية وتاريخ حضرموت، الأوضاع الاجتماعية لقبيلة بلعبيد، الأوضاع الاقتصادية لقبيلة بلعبيد، علاقة قبيلة بلعبيد بالقبائل الأخرى.
