يؤكد الكتاب المقدس أن يعقوب وأبناءه الاثنا عشر تقريبا تركوا كنعان في خضم مجاعة شديدة واستقروا في جاسان في شمال مصر. ومجمل القول إن حاخامات اليهود وجدوا أن أحسن طريقة يمكن إتباعها لربط تاريخهم بأقدم العصور، ولجعل عصر اليهود متصلا بأقدم الأزمنة هو استعمال مصطلح عبري للدلالة على اليهود بوجه عام وبذلك يصبح تاريخ فلسطين تاريخاً واحدا متصلا ومرتبطا، منذ أقدم العصور بالشعب اليهودي.
