\"العاصفة\" آخر ما كتب شكسبير من مسرحيات، وقد وضع فيها خلاصة عبقريته الشعرية. إنها مسرحية / قصيدة، تتحرك على مستوى الحدث ومستوى الرمز طيلة الوقت، بدءا بمشهدها الأول الذي يجعل من العاصفة قوة طاغية تتهدد حياة الكثيرين، ولكنها بدورها يتحكم بها الرمز الآخر، الساحر / الشاعر، ليجعلها وسيلة لا للانتقام والقتل والتدمير، بل للمصالحة والميلاد الجديد والحب. ثمة إجماع على أن بروسبيرو، بطل \"العاصفة\" يمثل شكسبير نفسه، وقد عزم في خاتمة المطاف على هجر كتابه السحري. ولكن شكسبير، قبل أن يفعل ذلك، يغني أغنيته الأخيرة هذه بلسان النشوة بالحياة، النشوة بالمستقبل، النشوة بالإنسان، ويبتكر شخصيتين لم يسبق أن رأينا مثلهما : آرييل وكاليبان، إنهما يجوهران في النهاية النقيضين اللذين هما في قلب الصراع القائم في الكون، واللذين هما جوهر الحلم : الإنسان. وكعادته، يقدم لنا جبرا إبراهيم جبرا ترجمة تنضح بالروح الشكسبيرية، ويضيف إليها عدة دراسات توضح قيمة هذه المسرحية وروعتها معا.
