يحكي الكتاب تفاصيل كثيرة عن سيرة المؤلف منذ ولادته عام 1932 حتى انتخابه رئيسا للجمهورية الفرنسية عام 1995 أي حتى وصول الرئيس الحالي نيكولا ساركوزي إلى الرئاسة الواضح أن الرئيس السابق شيراك يريد تجنب الحديث عن ساركوزي حرصا على أن لا يحرجه ولا يحرج نفسه بالوقت نفسه وهكذا يكتفي بالحديث المقتضب عن الرئيس الحالي في الفترة السابقة ويقول عنه أنه يضع نفسه حيث يبدو ضروريا ويضيف أنه رجل عصبي المزاج وعجول وشغوف بالحركة ويجيد فن التواصل مع الآخرين إن شيراك يتحدث ببساطة ووضوح عن أصوله العائلية البورجوازية الوسطى والميسورة وعن فترة شبابه الزاخرة بالمغامرات من كل صنف ونوع وعن بداياته في عالم السياسة.
