منذ سن الثامنة أصبح أحمد الريسوني يتيما بوفاة والده. والدته أحسنت تربيته بإدخاله أحسن المدارس القرآنية في منطقة جبالة. بانجذابه إلى التاريخ والفقه الإسلامي أظهر مثابرة ملحوظة في معرفة المؤلفين الكلاسيكيين الإسلاميين، وأضاف إليها ما أولاه من تعمق في معرفة الشريعة القرآنية. لم يدرس في أي جامعة، لكنه عرف كيف يتشرب معارف أفضل معلمي بلده جبالة. لقد أتقن معرفة الأصول، العلل والغايات. تحديد الأخطاء وتطبيق العقوبات أو التبرئة بحسب المتعين. الأضرار الأكاذيب أو الحقائق لإقرار العقوبات أو إصدار العفو بما يمليه العدل وهو ما لم يعرف له مثيل أبدا في زمنه.
