يتناول هاذا الكتاب تاريخ العلاقات بين المشرق والمغرب في العصور الوسطى ونقصد بالشرق بلاد المسلمين أو ما يسمى بدار الإسلام وبالغرب أوروبا أو ما يسمى بلاد إفرنجة، نسبة إلى شعوب عرفت بهذا الإسم وهم غير الروم، الذين عرفهم المسلمين في بلاد الشرق على أنهم ورثة الرومان وحاربوهم ونفوهم في آسية الصغرى، وهو يعرض لأول مرة تاريخ علاقات العصور الوسطى من وجهة النظرة الشرقية والتي لم تظهر بوضوح في كتاب سابقة، وقد تم الرجوع والاعتماد في المقام الأول على أواثق مصادرها التاريخية الشرقية والغربية وعرضها على أساس منهجي حديث.
