بعد أن كان قديما الشعر ديوان العرب اصبحت الرواية هى ديوان العرب ولكن كيف وصلت إلى النضج ؟ كم في المراحل التى مرت بها الرواية المصرية حتى تصل إلى أوجها ؟ وما هى مواصفات وأحداث تلك المراحل وسنعرف مع هذا الكتاب رحلة التطور التى عاشتها الراوية في مصر بعد ان كانت قالبا تعليميا صرفا إلى ظهرت روايات التسلية والروايات المترجمة ثم روايات مستوحاه من السيرة الذاتية والتى تعد بداية الشكل الحقيقي للرواية المصرية الناضجة. يناقش هذا الكتاب كل ما سبق بالتفصيل والدقة التى تبين لنا ما غمض علينا من هذا الموضوع بدءا من التيار التعليمي في القرن التاسع عشر حتى نصل محلقين في سماء روايات فنية عالية الحس مثل \"عودة الروح\" لتوفيق الحكيم وغيرها من إنتاج ثلاثينات القرن العشرين. كذلك مرفق مع الكتاب فهرس للروايات وسنوات نشرها منذ عام 1870 حتى 1938م.
