احتل الحجاج بن يوسف الثقفي مكانة متميزة بين أعلام الإسلام، ويندر أن تقرأ كتابًا في التاريخ أو الأدب ليس فيه ذكر للحجاج الذي خرج من سواد الناس إلى الصدارة بين الرجال وصانعي التاريخ بملكاته الفردية ومواهبه الفذة في القيادة والإدارة. وعلي قدر شهرة الحجاج كانت شهرة ما نُسب إليه من مظالم؛ حتى عده كثير من المؤرخين صورة مجسمة للظلم، ومثالا بالغا للطغيان، وأصبح ذكر اسمه يستدعي في الحال معاني الظلم والاستبداد، وضاعت أعمال الحجاج الجليلة بين ركام الروايات التي تروي مفاسده وتعطشه للدماء، وإسرافه في انتهاكها، وأضافت بعض الأدبيات التاريخية إلى حياته ما لم يحدث حتى صار شخصية أسطورية بعيدة كل البعد عن الحقيقة والواقع، وقليل من المؤرخين من أنصف الحجاج، ورد له ما يستحق من تقدير.
