يقع في ثمانية أسفار منذ حدد ذلك العدد أحمد المقري في «نفح الطيب»، لكن الأستاذ عبد الله كنون، في المقدمة التي كتبها لمختصر المناهل المطبوع الذي سنتحدث عنه أخيرا، استبعد أن يكون في المناهل أكثر من ثلاثة أجزاء، ما دام الجزء «الثاني» الذي عثر عليه وعلى مختصره(4) يتحدث عن معظم حياة أحمد المنصور أهم شخصية سعدية ومخدوم المؤلف، الذي أمره بوضع الكتاب، فلم يبق إذن إلا افتراض أن يكون الجزء الأول في نشأة الدولة السعدية وأخبار ملوكها الأول من محمد القائم بأمر الله حتى عبد الملك المعتصم، والثالث في بقية أخبار المنصور، وربما حتى ابنه زيدان الذي أخلص له الفشتالي وتوفي في أيامه، وبذلك تصح مقالة اليفراني في «نزهة الحادي» أن المناهل يقع في عدة مجلدات، ما دام أقل مفهوم (عدة) ثلاثة.
