هو نص من بين أربعة نصوص كتبها الفيلسوف الألماني فريدريك نيتشه بين الأعوام 1873-1876. تنبع أهمية الكتاب من أنه يمنح القارئ فرصة جديدة لتقصي العديد من الأفكار الرئيسية التي اشتغل عليها نيتشه فيما بعد في كتبه ودراساته اللاحقة. رغم أن الكتاب هو عن شوبنهاور إلا أنه في حقيقته يعرض لأفكار وتصورات نيتشه ذاته. كما كتب لاحقا في رسالة إلى أحد أصدقائه، حيث يمكن تتبع ذلك في إشارته إلى دور الفيلسوف وأهميته في المجتمع والمعاناة التي يواجهها من محيطه بسبب آرائه النقدية وتصوراته المضادة للمعتاد والمتداول من الأفكار والعادات والسلوك، ثم تأكيده االمتكرر على أهمية إفساح فرصة أكبر أمام الفيلسوف والعالم وأن لا يتحولا إلى أدوات في خدمة الدولة، بل ويطالب بقوة إلى حيادية نشاطاتهما والمؤسسات التعليمية والكف عن أن تكون في خدمة أهداف الدولة ومصالح الرأسماليين.
