الكاتب يتناول ظاهرة الاستشراق وكيف كان لها أثر كبير في تشكيل نظرة الغرب للإسلام، وكيف بدأ الاستشراق والهدف الرئيسي منه، وكيف كان عاملا مساعدا قويا في فترة الاستعمار وعلاقته بالاستعمار والتبشير، ثم كيف تطور إلى أن وصل إلى ما عليه الآن. وضح الشرقاوى أن الاستشراق كانت له مميزات وعيوب ويوضح هذه المميزات والعيوب ثم يتحدث عن المستشرقين وكيف كان يدفع الحقد والكره للإسلام بعضهم إلى تشويه الإسلام وتزييف الحقائق حتى يروجوا صورة مشوهة للمواطن الغربي تنفره من الإسلام وكيف كانوا يشوهون صورة النبي محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم ويزورون القصص والأساطير لتشويه صورته.
