يعد هذا الكتاب أحد المراجع القليلة التي تتناول المسرح من حيث هو \"عرض مسرحي\"، إنه ليس كتابا في التأليف المسرحي، ومؤلف الكتاب مخرج ناقد، أسس في لندن مسرحا تجريبيا باسم الخشبة الثانية وقدم عددا من العروض التجريبية وعمل مع العديد من الفرق الأمريكية، لم يكن ممكن لمؤلف أو ناقد مسرحي أن يكتب مثل هذا الكتاب فالمشتغل بالكلمة غير المشتغل بالصورة أو التكوين، خاصة حين التعرض لتجارب في المسرح المعاصر حيث لا تستخدم الكلمة على الإطلاق، غاية الطموح أن يؤدي هذا الكتاب دورا في واقعنا المسرحي، فالمسرح ما هو إلا وجه من وجوه الثقافة في المجتمع، وما الثقافة سوى ثقافة الطبقة السائدة أو الساعية للسيادة، وعلي فنان المسرح أن يختار إما أن يكون ثائرا أو يكون مطية للطبقة الصاعدة.
