يتناول هذا الكتاب عرضا عاما للفنون النثرية في أدبنا الحديث، يتحدث عن كل فن من الفنون النثرية في جملة من أعلامه المشهورين، فيعرف أخبارهم وينظر في نتاج أقلامهم وذلك بهدف الإلمام بما بلغه تطور الصناعة الكتابية في هذا القرن، وتسجيل ما لقادة الحركة الأدبية فيه من أيادي بيضاء ولا سيما منهم قدر رحلوا إلى دار البقاء. ولم يتقيد الكاتب في دراسة لإعلام الرواد بل تجاوزه إلى الفن الشعري عند من اشتهر منهم بذلك وكان له ديوان مطبوع. وتشتمل مباحث الكتاب على : المقالة، الخطابة، القصة، السيرة، النقد، وما لكل فن من أعلام عرفوا به وشهد لهم بالتقدم فيه.
