يضم هذا الكتاب مجموعة من الدراسات الأدبية كتبت ما بين سنتي 1961 و1965. وهذه الدراسات وان اختلفت في موضوعاتها إلا أنها تلتقي في النهاية حول منهج واحد في التفكير الأدبي، وهو المنهج الذي يبحث وراء الجمال الأدبي عن قيم انسانية تضيف إلى الحياة شيئًا وتترك فيها أثرًا من الآثار، وهذا المنهج وإن كان يحرص أشد الحرص على الجمال الأدبي فهو يحرص أشد الحرص على الوظيفة الإنسانية للأدب، ولا يعترف بهذا الأدب السهل الذي كتبه أصحابه للتسلية العابرة وقضاء الوقت، فالأدب في ميزان هذا المنهج هو موقف انساني عميق يعيشه الكاتب ويعبر عنه ويدعو إليه.
