ابتدأ هذا الكتاب بتوثيق تاريخ الأزد في العصر الجاهلي؛ من أنساب قبائل الأزد، وأهم رجالها، وأماكن انتشارها، وحيواتها السياسية والاقتصادية والاجتماعية والدينية، وذلك في القسم الأول من الكتاب، أما القسم الآخر فهو ديوان الأزد في العصر الجاهلي، ويضم الشعر الذي قاله شعراء الأزد في هذا العصر ممن ليسوا من المشهورين، ولم تطبع لهم دواوين، غير أنه لم يضم شعراء الأزد الكبار ممن جمعت دواوينهم سابقا أو ممن وصلت إلينا مخطوطاتهم كحسان بن ثابت الخزرجي.
