يتحدث الكتاب عن مهمة التطور القانوني في الدولة السودانية الحديثة في سنوات ما بعد الاستعمار وقراءة للتاريخ السياسي الإسلامي وتفريق بين القانون الإسلامي (الشريعة) والقانون المدني وفهم للإسلام السوداني المتصوف وكيف انتشر الإسلام في السودان وأخيرا نقد لفكرة الاقتصاد الإسلامي التي تبنتها الحركة الإسلامية في عهد نميري. في بعض الأحيان الكتاب عبارة عن مقالة رأي طويلة تدحض الخطاب الإسلامي الصاعد وحتى التجسد في قوانين سبتمبر للعام 1983 وأيضا الكثير من التبرير للتراث الإسلامي وتقديس عقلاني لفجر الإسلام.
