أصل الكتاب دراسة تقدم بها المؤلف لنيل درجة الماجستير وقد قسمت إلى أربعة فصول رئيسة وخاتمة وقد تناول الفصل الأول العوامل التي ساعدت في قيام الدولة الرسولية في اليمن كما استعرض المؤلف الحياة القبلية منذ قيام الدولة الرسولية مع التركيز على دور القبيلة في مساندة الدولة أو معارضتها وتناول الفصل الثاني التمردات القبلية وأسباب قيامها والفصل الثالث قد خصصه المؤلف عن القبائل التي رفعت راية التمرد والعصيان ومنها قبائل عك والأشاعر ومذحج وحمير وغيرها والفصل الرابع تناول دراسة الأساليب المختلفة السلمية والعسكرية التي أتبعها سلاطين هذه الدولة لقمع التمردات التي بلغت ذروتها في بعض المناطق وانتهى بخاتمة وملاحق ومصادر مرجعية وفهارس.
