الرواية تقص حكاية رائعة وهي اندفاع معلمة البيانو \"إريكا موهوت\" كزوبعة إلى داخل الشقة التي تقنطها هي وأمها، التي يحلو لها أن تطلق على ابنتها \"زوبعتها الصغيرة\" لأن الطفلة أشبه بعفريت صغير ذي سرعة مخيفة، وهي لا تكف عن محاولة التهرب من أمها، وفي حين أن إريكا في أواخر الثلاثينيات من عمرها، فإن أمها في عمر قد يجعلها في عمر جدتها، بدأ الزمن المحيط بإريكا يتحول شيئا فشيئا إلى قالب من الجص، يتفتت ما إن تلمسه أمها كانت إريكا في تلك اللحظات تجلس هناك مع بقايا الزمن الملتف حول رقبتها الرفيعة كأنشوطة. تخابرها الأم فتجعلها موضع سخرية الآخرين.
