الكتاب في الأساس كان أطروحة أكاديمية نال بها المؤلف الباحث درجة الدكتوراه من جامعة عدن. وينقسم الكتاب إلى بابين بالإضافة إلى مقدمة وتمهيد في الباب الأول تناول المؤلف الظواهر الصوتية عبر سبعة فصول وفي الباب الثاني المكون من سبعة فصول تم فيها تناول الظواهر النحوية، ويوضح المؤلف في مفتتح كتابه إلى دوافع هذه الدراسة في النقاط التالية : موضوع اللهجة اليافعية موضوع بكر لم يدرس دراسة علمية من سابق، توثيق اللهجة من أفواه المتحدثين بها عن طريق أبنائها.
