يتناول الكتاب حيث لم يكد القرن الخامس الهجري يوشك على الانتهاء حتى أخذت جحافل الفرنجة تتدفق نحو ديار الشام، وظهر الجيش الصليبي أمام أسوار أنطاكية سنة 491 هـ، وظل محاصرا لها حتى استولى عليها سنة 492 هـ مؤسسا بها إمارة، كما استولى سنة 491 هـ على الرها وأقام فيها إمارة ثانية، وانتزع سنة 492 هـ بيت المقدس وأقام فيها مملكة، وحاصر الجيش الصليبي طرابلس سنين عديدة حتى سقطت سنة 502 هـ واتخذها إمارة أخرى، وبهذا يكون الصليبيون قد بسطوا نفوذهم على معظم المدن الكبرى في بلاد الشام، في حين انحـر الوجود الإسلامي في حلب وحمص وحماة ودمشق وبعض الأعمال التابعة لها.
