يذهب الباحث في كتابه هذا إلى أن تحلل الهوية الحضارية العربية إلى عنصريها المكونينن لها، وهما النظرية الإسلامية وما انبثق عنها من نظام حياتي (وليس الدين والعبادات فقط)، والعروبة (ثقافة ولغة، وليست عرقا). بحيث أصبح هذان المكونان عدوين لدودين يحاول كل منهما القضاء على الآخر، ومحوه من الوجود. وهي العلة التي أدت إلى تخلف هذه الهوية وضعفها. ولا يتوقف الباحث المعروف د. إبراهيم يحيى الشهابي عند إبراز وتحليل أسباب (انفصام الهوية الحضارية العربية)، بل يحاول التركيز على طرح البديل والعلاج لإعادة بناء هذه الهوية.
