عنوان الرواية يقصد به الخبز في السنوات الأولى بعد الحرب العالمية الثانية الجوع هو المؤثر الأقوى على حياة الناس في سنوات ما بعد الحرب حيث الحصول على الطعام مهمة صعبة وخاصة الخبز لغلو ثمنه أحداث يوم واحد في حياة فالتر فندريش يحكي فيه عن تحولات حياته وأفكاره وعن ذكريات الجوع والتوق الدائم للخبز حتى بعد ما أصبح قادرا على شرائه يحاول التحرر من عبء الماضي والحاضر لكنه يظل حائرا في اختياراته رسم هاينريش بل بدقة شخصية بطل روايته، وما بداخله من ذكريات مؤلمة وحزن يختبئ بمرور السنين وراء رتابة الحياة والعلاقات وضغوط العمل.
