يعرض هذا الكتاب عصر النهضة أو الريسانس أو الميلاد الجديد في أوروبا بعد الانعتاق من أغلال الإقطاع وبحور الظلام ولقد كان للحضارة العربية الإسلامية فضل يعترف به الجميع في تنوير العقلية الأوروبية بعد ترجمة شوامخ الفكر العربي إلى اللاتينية في مختلف فروع المعرفة. ولقد قدر لإيطاليا أن تقود ركب النهضة الأوروبية من خلال الحركة الإنسانية، والتي وصلت آثارها إلى ما وراء جبال الألب لتطال فرنسا وألمانيا وإنجلترا. وقد شهد القرن الخامس عشر حركة الكشوف الجغرافية التي كانت في واقع الأمر توسعا أوروبيا إمبرياليا في الشرق والغرب، حيث تم البطش بالهنود شرقا وبالهنود الحمر غربا. ولعل أهم حدث في عصر النهضة هو حركة الإصلاح الديني التي أشعل نيرانها مارتن لوثر، والذي قدر له ولأتباعه \"البروتستانت\" أن يدقوا المسمار الأخير في نعش بابوية العصور الوسطى ومحاكم تفتيشها !
