في القاهرة دار للأوبرا سمي باسمها ميدان فسيح يعرفه جميع سكانها، ومع ذلك فقليل من عامة الناس من يدركون مدلول لفظة أوبرا التي سميت بها هذه الدار وأطلقت على ذلك الميدان، بل إن أغلب الناس يظنون أن مسرح الأوبرا هو مجرد اسم علم أطلق على أحد مسارح القاهرة كما أطلق على مسارح أخرى بها كمسرح رمسيس ومسرح الجمهورية، وعلى ضوء ذلك يقدم هذا الكتاب دراسة حول فن الأوبرا، ويقع الكتاب في سبعة فصول : (نشأة الأوبرا ونموها حتى عهد الكلاسيك، الأوبرا قبيل فاجنر، إصلاح فاجنر، المسرح الإيطالي والفرنسي من بعد فاجنر، الأوبرات القومية، تطورات الأوبرا بأمريكا، والأوبرا العصرية)
