يتناول الكتاب، بالتوثيق والتحليل، قضية المعتقلات التي أقامتها السلطات الإسرائيلية لمن اعتقلتهم قواتها من الفلسطينيين والعرب خلال عملية احتلال مختلف المدن والقرى الفلسطينية في أثناء حرب 1948. وقد شملت هذه الاعتقالات الآلاف من الفلسطينيين الذين كانوا قادرين على حمل السلاح، وتم توقيفهم فترات تتراوح ما بين 12 شهرا و18 شهرا. وعلى الرغم من أهمية الموضوع فإن قلة من الكتاب تناولته بصورة عرضية على هامش موضوعات أخرى تتعلق بنكبة 1948، علما بأن الآلاف من المعتقلين وعائلاتهم هجروا بعد موجة الهجرة الكبرى خلال الحرب، في إطار عملية تطويع الأقلية العربية الباقية ضمن حدود إسرائيل بعد إقامتها.
