هذا الكتاب يعالج في فصوله التالية تاريخ فلسطين خلال المرحلتين الثالثة والرابعة، أي منذ ثورة نقيب الأشرف في القدس (1703-1705)، وظهور الزيادنة في الجليل في تلك الفترة ذاتها، حتى نهاية الحكم العثماني في سنوات الحرب العالمية الأولى. أما فصل التمهيد والذي أرخ للمرحلتين الأولى والثانية فإنه يعرض لأهم التطورات، ولا سيما السياسية منها، في القرنين السادس عشر والسابع عشر. ويكشف الكتاب جذورا متعددة لبداية الحداثة في فلسطين، التي لم تنجم عن أحداث محددة وإنما أتت كنتيجة تراكمية لتطورات سياسية واقتصادية واجتماعية حدثت في القرن الثامن عشر واستمرت طوال العهد العثماني.
