في أوائل عام 1967 م، أعار أ حد الأصدقاء الذين عرفوا اهتمامات المؤلف بالأغنية الشعبية، عن دراسته لها في منطقة البرلس كفرالشيخ، وهذا الكتاب النادر لمدة يومين لايزيدان ساعة واحدة، لأسباب لم يجادل فيها آنذاك، ولم يعرفها إلى الآن، وكان الكتاب مفاجأة بالنسبة له، فها هو رجل فرنسي لاعلاقة له بالفولكلور المأثورات الشعبية-يهتم بالأغنية الشعبية، فيبدأ في جمعها أثناء عمله في التنقيب عن الآثار في صعيد مصر في الفترة من 1910 م إلى 1914، ولا يكتفي الرجل بجمع الأغنية، وإنما يحاول تصنيفها، وتقديمها مكتوبة بلهجتها المحلية، وبالحروف اللاتينية وفقا لطريقة نطق كلماتها، لكي يسهل على القارئ الذي لا يعرف العربية قراتها، ثم يضيف إلى كل ذلك ترجمة بالفرنسية لها.
