يستعرض الكتاب أشكال الأدب الشعبى النسائى فى صعيد مصر، المتمثل في الأفراح حيث تنطلق زغاريد النساء لتبعث فى النفوس البهجة والفرحة ويعلو صوت أغانيهن ليقدمن من خلالها النصح للعروس والحكمة من خلاصة تجاربهن السابقة وفى مناسبات الوفاة ينطلق عويل النساء ليكون الإعلان الأول عن الوفاة، ثم تنشد النساء مراثى تتسم بالشجن ولوعة الفراق، لتظهر قيمة المتوفى عند أهله والأثر فراقه على نفوسهم وفى موسم الحج تنشد النساء أغانى التحنين التى تعبر عن الحنين لزيارة الأراضي المقدسة ووصف للرحلة وتعبر عن فرحتهن بالقدر الذى اختار ذويهن لزيارة الكعبة المشرفة وقبر الرسول(صلى الله عليه وسلم) وغيرها.
