يقدم هذا الكتاب وصفا رائعا لأساليب الاتصال الرسمية التي وظفت في الشرق الأدنى منذ عصور ما قبل الإسلام، وحتى العصر المملوكي، وضع الحكام النظم البريدية كي يبقوا سيطرتهم على أصقاع واسعة من الأرض، فقد مكنت هذه النظم التي ظهرت قبل قرون من اختراع محركات البخار أو السيارات، تدويرا سريعا وفاعلا لبضائع مختلفة فمن البشر والجياد إلى الفواكه الغريبة والثلج، إضافة للأخبار والرسائل طبعا، وبما أن الإرسالية المنقولة عادة كانت تحتوي تقارير سرية من ولايات الحاكم، فقد تضاعفت هذه النظم التي أصبحت شبكات تجسس تصل من خلالها الأخبار للسلطات المركزية بسرعة تكفي للقيام بإجراء كبح للأحداث.
