أنجز الباحث الآثاري العراقي عبد الستار العزاوي كتاب «طرق القوافل ومحطاتها دراسة تاريخية وآثارية» ويوضح الكتاب أهمية المسالك القديمة وفروعها ومحطاتها وما تقدمه للمسافرين ولحماية التجار، وكيف كانت تنقل الأخبار والحوادث وتنتشر فيها، فضلا عن وظيفتها في ربط المدن بمركز الحكم والسيطرة عليها. ويرى أن مصطلح طريق الحرير غير صحيح، لأنه أطلق حديثا فيما كانت المسالك أو الطرق كطريق خراسان، والبصرة، والكوفة، وهمدان الأقدم، مؤكدا أن ذكر مصطلح «طريق الحرير» من قبل الغرب هو لجعل بلادنا العربية همزة وصل في استيراد ونقل مادة الحرير من الشرق إلى أوروبا، ولعل الأبرز في البحث هو منارة «موجدة» التي طبع صورتها على الغلاف، والتي نقب عنها بمساعدة بعثة آثار يابانية، وتقع في العراق في منطقة مرتفعة تساعد على الاطلاع.
