تقسم المحققة الدكتورة (سعاد ضمد حمود السوداني) كتاب (مختصر تاريخ الخلفاء) لمؤلفه (إسماعيل بن علي الخطبي) إلى قسمين، وجعلت القسم الأول للدرسة ووضعته في ثلاثة فصول، وهما كما يأتي : الفصل الأول : حياة المؤلف (أبي محمد إسماعيل الخطبي) ومصادر ترجمته ورتبتها ترتیبا زمنيا وتحدثت عن عصره، واسمه، ونسبه، وشيوخه، وتلاميذه، ومؤلفاته، ومكانته العلمية، ووفاته، أما الفصل الثاني : فجعلته لدراسة كتب تاریخ الخلفاء من ضمنها كتاب مؤلفنا (الخطبي) ووصف الكتاب ومحتواه، ومنهجه وموارده، الفصل الثالث : جعلته لوصف النسخة الخطية ومنهج التحقيق، وأهمية المخطوط بما اشتمل عليه من تراجم وأحداث بوصفه مصدرا لكثير من المؤرخين الذين أفادوا منه. أما القسم الثاني من هذا الكتاب : فهو النص المحقق وختمته بتثبيت المصادر والمراجع التي اعتمدت عليها هذه الدراسة والتحقيق مخطوطها ومطبوعها مرتبة على حروف المعجم بالنسبة لأسماء مؤلفيها.
