في رواية الجيوش ينسج إيبيليو روسيرو بعبقرية خيوط قصة عن أهوال الحرب والكيفية التي قد تقلب بها حياة المدني الأعزل العالق بين نيرانها رأسا على عقب، ويعرض لنا بالمثل الصورة التي قد يصبح بها الإنسان كل شيء ونقيضه. وتدور أحداث الرواية حول إسماعيل باسوس المدرس المتقاعد الذي يعيش في قرية سان خوسيه مع زوجته أوتيليا، ولا يهتم بشيء تقريبا سوى التلصص على بيت جاره «البرازيلي» وزوجته جيرالدينا. تؤنبه أوتيليا على أفعاله التي لا تتماشى مع سنه، فالقرية صغيرة وألسن السوء لا تغيب أبدا. القرية نفسها مكروبة بحوادث الاختفاء والاختطاف التي تمارسها الجماعات المتمردة وشبه العسكرية. ذات يوم، يعود باسوس إلى بيته، ويجد أن زوجته قد اختفت، وحين يبدأ رحلة البحث عنها، يكتشف القارئ المعاناة الفعلية التي تتعرض لها القرية تحت وطأة النزاع الداخلي الكولومبي، إلى أن تسقط أهوال الحرب حرفيا فوق رأس باسوس وجيرانه.
