تحدث الكتاب عن دراسة اللهجات العربية التي هي أساس علم اللغة بحسب كلام المتقدمين، إذ لم تكن دراستها بالأمر السهل بل لعلها من أصعب الدراسات، لأن المعلومات عنها شتات توزعت بين كتب اللغة والأدب والتراجم والدواوين، وتعد اللهجات العربية من أهم أسباب أشأة القراءات القرآنية، لكن نحاة البصرة باستثناء-سيبويه-وتابعهم الفراء من الكوفيين وقفوا من القراءات القرآنية موقف المتشدد فشذذوا ما خالف قواعدهم التي قعدوها ورموا بعضها بالقبح واللحن.
