يعني هذا الكتاب البحر-الى حد انه ظن ان كل معجم لغوي يطلق عليه قاموس وممن شرحه المرتضى الزبيدي في تاج العروس، وقد رتبه بحسب الحرف الاخير من المادة على حروف الهجاء بإسم \"باب\"، ثم بحسب الحرف الاول من المادة فصولا ضمن هذا الكتاب، فكلمة \"زيت\" مثلا\" نجدها في باب التاء فصل الزاي وهكذا، وقد ميزت مادة الكلمة باللون الاحمر.
