يتحدث الكاتب في مؤلفه عن الشاعر محمود درويش وتحولات مشروعه الشعري، ليصبح مشروعا إنسانيا كونيا، فيقدم محطات من حياة درويش وقراءات لقصيدته، ومواقفه السياسية والوطنية، في أربعة حوارات كان قد أجراها معه خلال فترة زمنية تمتد من عام 1995 حتى 2005 . بوابة الكتاب عبارة عن مقتطفات من أقوال درويش يليها مقال بعنوان \"العشاء الأخير في باريس\" يكتبه رئيس تحرير القدس العربي سابقا عبد الباري عطوان، يروي فيه علاقته بدرويش ومراحل تكون الصداقة بينهما، وصولا إلى العشاء الأخير الذي جمعه به في العاصمة الفرنسية . ينقسم الكتاب إلى سبعة عناوين، هي: قال محمود درويش، والعشاء الأخير في باريس، ومقاطع من صلة خاصة، ولا تستطيع أن تكون بعد الظهر شاعرا وفي الصباح سياسيا، وسيرتي الشعرية لا تقتصر على هجرة وعودة ومنفى ووطن، واستبقت النقاد وأراجع تجربتي ولا أركن إلى أي إنجاز.
