رسالة الغفران هو كتاب وضعه أبو العلاء في أثناء عزلته ردا على رسالة بعث إليه بها شيخ حلبي من أهل الأدب والرواية يدعى علي بن منصور ويعرف بابن القارح، وفيها يشكو أمره إليه، ويطلعه على بعض أحواله، ثم يعرض لأشخاص من الزنادقة والملاحدة أو المتهمين بدينهم فيتحدث عنهم ويذكر شيئا من أخبارهم ثم يسأله في ختامها أن يجيب عليها، فهذه الرسالة لم تكن لتوضع في تاريخ الأدب العربي لو تكن سببا لخلق رسالة الغفران، فإن الفيلسوف الضرير لم يشأ أن يرد على سائله إلا بعدما صدر جوابه بقصة رائعة جرت حوادثها في موقف الحشر، فالجنة فالجحيم، ووسمها برسالة الغفران لكثرة ما تردد فيها ذكر الغفران ومشتقاته وما ورد في معناه، وسؤال الشاعر الذي كتبت له النجاة بم غفر لك.
