تعد رسالة الغفران إحدى درر الأدب العربي؛ فهي رسالة نثرية في رداء روائي نقدي ولسان فلسفي يجسد كوميدية إلهية، مسرح البشر فيها يكون الجنة والنار وتضم هذه الرسالة آراء أبى العلاء في الدين والعلم والأخلاق وفي أساليب الشعوب وفنونها وقد كتبها ردا على رسالة ابن القارح الذي جعل منه فارسا يمتطي جواد رسالته الخيالية التي حاور فيها الشعراء والأدباء واللغويين ويستهل أبو العلاء رسالته بذكر الأثر الطيب لرسالة ابن القارح في نفسه، ثم يطلق العنان لخياله الجامح ؛ فيصف لنا المنزلة التي وصل لها ابن القارح في الدار الآخرة، كما يصنف مراتب الشعراء في الجنة والنار بما شفع لهم من أشعار أنزلتهم منازل رياض الجنة كزهير بن أبي سلمى. فالخيال في هذه الرسالة مزين ببريق من هدي الواقع وهذا ما كفل لهذه الرسالة منطقية العرض رغم ارتدائها أثواب من الخيال.
