تبني الرواية حدثها الغرامي تاريخيا على خلفية تقسيم البنغال 1905 عندما بدأ البنغاليون المتعصبون باللجوء إلى القوة والقهر لإستيلاد رابطة قومية في ما يسميها نيكيل ساخرا \"بدعة الأمة\" تجلت في مقاطعة البضائع الإنجليزية بحركة وطنية سميت بالسواديشي، وهي حركة عنفية ذات أهداف اقتصادية قصيرة المدى دون وجود بدائل هندية مناسبة. أما حرية بيمالا النسوية زوجة نيكيهليش فهي حرية خاصة لا تتمتع بها النساء في الهند ولا تصيب الأختين الأرملتين في البيت، فبيمالا تتجاوز حرمات الحرملك إلى لقاء سانديب في غرفة الضيوف وسط امتعاض سلفتيها الأرملتين اللتين تغمزان منها إلى حد الاتهام الجنسي، لكن الرواية حفزت شخصيات ونخبا هندية على الاقتداء بها وتجد الأوساط المحافظة أن الحرية التي تمتعت بها بيمالا كانت مدخلا إلى الخيانة الزوجية المعنوية.
