تناولت الدراسات المعاصرة مسألة الرمزية والتأويل في فكر ابن عربي مع بداية القرن العشرين وبخاصة في كتاب أبي العلا عفيفي، وهو أطروحته للدكتوراه التي صدرت في لندن باللغة الإنجليزية. وينطوي هذا الكتاب لأول مرة على أفكار حديثة حول هذه المسألة. تقوم مؤلفات ابن عربي في غالبيتها على الرمز، أما التأويل فيشغل حيزا واسعا من مشاهداته الصوفية، لكن المفارقة الكبرى التي تنم عنها فلسفته، تكمن في أنه كالحنابلة وأهل الظاهر يتحاشى التفسير العقلاني الذي تبنته المعتزلة والفلاسفة، ومع ذلك فهو يفتح الباب على مصراعيه أمام التأويل المستند إلى السماع الإلهي أو المستمد من تجربته الصوفية الخاصة.
